This information is to help you understand how to get the most benefit from your dental insurance.
Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance carrier. We will, as a courtesy, bill your insurance and help you receive the maximum allowable benefit under your policy. However, we expect patients to be responsible for communicating with their insurance carrier on any open claims. I find that patients who are involved with their claims process are more successful at receiving prompt and accurate payment services from their insurance carrier.
We find that many patients get confused by the fact that dental insurance is not the same as medical insurance, where there are very different benefits. Most dental insurance is a separate policy that has an annual benefit maximum. Once this annual amount is used for services rendered, you are responsible for any balance due. If you do not use your benefits for the year, you may lose that benefit because most dental insurances do not carry that amount over to the following year.
So if you are paying for dental benefits, be sure to take advantage of what they offer. Even if there is no work to be done, you are still allowed routine exams and cleaning, usually twice a year, at no cost to you depending on your dental benefits package.
To ensure you receive your insurance benefits, it is your responsibility to know if our office participates with your insurance plan. Failure to provide all required information might mean the patient has to pay for all charges.
When insurance is involved, we are contractually obligated to collect co-payments, co-insurance, and deductibles, as outlined by your insurance carrier.
